Blowfish Tab Kondla as Head Coach

On Wednesday, October 28th the Lexington County Blowfish officially introduced Fico Kondla as head coach for the 2021 season. Fico Kondla becomes the 7th coach in Blowfish baseball history and the 4th coach to lead the Blowfish at Lexington County Baseball Stadium. Kondla is currently an assistant coach at Newberry College in Newberry, South Carolina. This is Kondla’s third stint in the Coastal Plain League, first serving as an assistant coach in Florence in 2016. Most recently, Kondla served as an assistant coach in 2018 and 2019 with the Morehead City Marlins. During those two seasons, the Marlins won back to back CPL Pettit Cup Championships.

“I’ve heard great things about Lexington and the support here from the front office to the players on the field,” Kondla told the local Lexington County Chronicle newspaper. “It’s a first class organization and I was looking for a head coaching opportunity and I was lucky enough that things aligned and this was opening up this summer. I applied and, luckily, got the job.”

The 2021 season marks a return to a four division layout in the Coastal Plain League which recently released the schedule for the 25th season of CPL baseball. The Blowfish remain in the South Division, alongside the Savannah Bananas, Macon Bacon, and the newest franchise in Spartanburg (formerly the Gastonia Grizzlies). And Kondla is looking forward to challenging the Bacon and Bananas for a championship by doing things the right way. “Being organized, having a team that wants to win, that wants to be there the whole summer, that plays for each other, play the game the right way, running hard, playing hard, not doing things that disrespect the game,” is how Kondla wants the Blowfish to play in 2021.

“We are thrilled to welcome Fico as the next head coach of the Lexington County Blowfish,” Assistant General Manager Justin Hall stated. “Our roster is beginning to take shape and I believe fans will be pleased with the energy that the Blowfish will bring in 2021…It’ll be a season you don’t want to miss!”

The Blowfish are coming off their best season in Lexington County, finishing the 2020 campaign with a 23-13 record. The 2021 season will mark the 16th season of Blowfish baseball and the team’s 7th in Lexington County.

Lexington County opens the 2021 season on Wednesday, May 26th against the Catawba Valley Stars.
