Playing the Bacon for the second time in just three games, the Blowfish trounced their familiar foe with a final score of 16-2 with only seven innings needed to secure the victory.
The Blowfish starter was a familiar face – Austin Williamson who was a member of the 2023 Petitt-Cup winning squad and returned to The Lex for his first outing in two summers.
Williamson took a little while to settle in, but his defense had his back, taking advantage of some aggressive Bacon baserunning for out number two, followed by an easy grounder to third to get out of the first frame scoreless.
Throughout the game, the Blowfish offense poured it on with two outs. In the bottom of the 1st, Zach Cowart started the rally off with a single past the second baseman. Zander Buchan followed him up with an infield single on a perfectly executed hit-and-run. For Macon, it went from bad to worse. After a passed ball put both runners in scoring position, Carson Bryant put a fastball down the middle. Blake Martin mashed it to right-center field, high in the trees for the first Blowfish home run of the 2025 season. They led it 3-0.
But the fun wasn’t over just yet… Gray Wells drew a walk and in his first CPL at bat, Garrett Fulmer smoked a ball to deep left field where it bounced off the glove of a diving Luke Elmore. Gray Wells scored from first and Fulmer had a stand-up double as his first knock in the 20th anniversary red. Brandon Gibbs singled into right field to drive in one more and the damage was done, Blowfish led 5-0 after just one inning.
A pair of singles with no outs set the table for the Bacon to try and claw back into the game. Back-to-back fielder’s choices brought one run across, and a pop-up to shallow left would leave two stranded and the Blowfish still in front, 5-1.
The Bacon would add another in the top of the 3rd, but the Blowfish offense got back in their groove in the bottom half of the 4th. After Fulmer went down on strikes, Gibbs added to a great day with another single and the Blowfish’s first stolen base of the season. He ended up at third base after a bad throw-down and was driven in on a fielder’s choice by Parker Mergo. With two outs, another 5-spot was looming.
Nick DiCarlo laid down a bunt single, followed up by a single up the middle by Andrew Ortiz. Cowart was then hit by a pitch, loading the bases. Buchan rocketed a single to left field that scored two runs and Martin added to his massive day with a slicing double to left-center field. Just like that it was 10-2 Blowfish.
Williamson was fully in control on the mound and the top of the 5th was capped off with a 5-4-3 double play to end it. In the bottom half of the 5th, the Blowfish continued producing with the bats, Mergo singling and coming around to score on another error by the Bacon.
Williamson stayed in for the top of the 6th and once again didn’t allow a run. The Blowfish, with the run rule in sight, had another 5 run inning in the bottom of the 6th. Buchan drew a leadoff walk, and big back-to-back doubles from Wells and Fulmer would bring him around. Gibbs and Mergo were walked and DiCarlo drove in Fulmer with a sacrifice fly. Ortiz drove in Gibbs with an infield single and Mergo came around after Buchan was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
16-2 was the score after another spurt of offense.
In the top of the 7th, the Blowfish would make a pitching change. Gavyn Seitz came in and sat down the Bacon batters in order, all by way of the strikeout, to end the game in just seven innings.
