Full circle: A former Blowfish player and two-time Coastal Plain League All-Star returns as team’s new skipper.

LEXINGTON, S.C. – Two-time Coastal Plain League All-Star Zach Cowart has been named the new Lexington County Blowfish head coach, General Manager Tony Baldwin announced Tuesday.

Cowart, who attended River Bluff High School, was a three-year standout for the Blowfish during his collegiate summers, playing college ball at North Greenville and later Lander.

“Bringing Zach back to lead this team is about as full-circle as it gets,” Baldwin said. “He’s a Lexington guy from River Bluff High School, right in our backyard, and he became a champion in his very first season in a Blowfish uniform, back in 2023. He understands what this organization means to the community, and he understands what it takes to win in this league. Now we get to see him do it from the dugout as our head coach.”

The former middle infielder helped the Blowfish to a Coastal Plain League (CPL) Pettit Cup championship in 2023 and was twice named a CPL All-Star. He also earned all-league honors twice during his collegiate summer baseball career.

“I’m really excited and grateful for the opportunity to be in the Blowfish organization,” Cowart said. “I’m looking forward to building a culture that our players and community can be proud of while helping our guys develop and compete at a high level.”

Cowart graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Lander in May 2026, and was named the 2026 Peach Belt Conference Tournament Most Valuable Player.

Following his collegiate career, Cowart signed a professional contract with the Gastonia Ghost Peppers of the Atlantic League, where he finished the 2026 campaign with a .300 batting average.

Cowart recently accepted an assistant coach position at Spartanburg Methodist for the 2027 collegiate season, and will lead the Blowfish as head coach beginning summer 2027. He has already started recruiting for the upcoming Lexington County season.

“For Zach to come back to the Blowfish as a former player and now be our head coach is special,” Baldwin added. “That’s not something every organization gets to experience. We couldn’t be more excited for what’s next.”
