Former Lexington County Blowfish and South Carolina Gamecock Will Sanders heard his name called in the 4th round of the 2023 MLB Draft today, being selected 113th overall by the Chicago Cubs.

Sanders came to the Blowfish as a rising freshman in the summer of 2020 and pitched in 9 games as one of the youngest arms in the league. Sanders had a 2-1 record with 22 strikeouts to just 10 walks in 21 innings of work, primarily in relief.

Across 3 years in a Gamecock uniform, Sanders was 17-10 in 51 games, 36 of which came as a starter. The Georgia-born righty posted a 4.08 ERA in his career, showing an aptitude for strikeouts, finishing his career with 222 in 205.1 innings pitched. Sanders was named to the SEC All-Freshman Team in 2021 after he went 6-3 in 22 games (10 starts) with a 3.54 ERA.

Sanders is just the latest name to move through the Blowfish-Gamecock-MLB Draft pipeline, as he becomes the 25th player to play for both Lexington County and South Carolina to be drafted by an MLB organization. Will is the 105th former Blowfish to be drafted in team history, and the second of the year, joining Michigan State first baseman Brock Vradenburg as Day 2 selections in 2023. Only one other Blowfish alum has been drafted by the Cubs, which came back in 2017 when Chris Singleton from Charleston Southern went in the 19th round to Chicago.

The entire Lexington County Blowfish organization congratulates Will, and wishes him all the best as he begins his professional career.
